Instrumentarium #3 — Popcorn in Training
Jan 23 – Feb 15, 2026
exhibition extended until February 15
opening experience: Jan 23 / Fri / 6:00 PM

A hands-on sonic happening and installation in which visitors collaboratively built an immersive sound environment and jewelry using basic electronic components and e-waste — part of WRO’s Instrumentarium series reimagining the piano as an ecological and artistic object.

What is the sound of one popcorn popping?
If you were a kernel, how would you pop?
What happens when we all pop together?

Popcorn in Training is a hands-on happening that transforms into a sound installation, inviting the public to collaboratively build an immersive sonic experience while exploring the material foundations of electronic music: wires, resistors, capacitors, and chips.

Our handmade square-wave oscillators echo the metronomic knocking and tapping of the deconstructed piano. Together, participants create a soundscape where pops, clicks, and squeaks slip in and out of sync, sparking unexpected encounters with harmony and happenstance.

This work encourages playful experimentation with DIY electronics and dynamic troubleshooting as an improvisational approach to experimental music-making. The project draws on media archaeology while demystifying technology through direct material engagement.

The public is invited to actively participate in building circuits and/or cable necklaces or simply drop in to listen as the installation evolves. The event kicks off with the pop of the first oscillator and gradually builds over the course evening.

Workshop / Performance, ZKM Hertz-Lab, Karlsruhe (DE), November 2025

A participatory happening presented as part of the Giga-Hertz Festival for Electronic Music and Sound Art

—

What is the sound of one popcorn popping? If you were a kernel, how would you pop? And what happens when we all pop together?
This hybrid workshop / sonic happening invites you to collaboratively build an immersive sound experience using handmade square-wave oscillators. Together, we create an experimental multi-track drum machine where pops, clicks, and squeaks slip in and out of sync, sparking unexpected encounters with harmony and happenstance.

“Popcorn in Training” encourages playful experimentation with DIY electronics and dynamic troubleshooting as an improvisational approach to experimental music-making. Open to anyone curious about sound, electricity, and popcorn – beginners especially welcome!

The exhibition Total Babes invites viewers to explore themes of softness, power and feminine energy in contemporary art. At its heart, the exhibition examines the multifaceted nature of cuteness, the divine feminine and the animistic belief that (mother) nature is a living, dynamic entity. These concepts are viewed through the lens of how they manifest in people, places and things, particularly at a time when feminine archetypes are reemerging and reshaping our understanding of identity and balance.

Bringing together works across a range of mediums, Total Babes presents diverse interpretations of archetypes, mythological figures and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. Through these varied perspectives, the exhibition offers an engaging and thought-provoking exploration of vulnerability, strength and empowerment by opening a portal to bring the ethereal down to earth.

HIFI to LOFI Continuum is an artist talk, conversation and listening session that takes a (metaphorical) dive into an old dumpster to uncover the material politic of Music (and sound) and its predominant role within throw-away culture. The event traces out aspects of music’s material entanglements with humans and ecology by exploring the artist’s archive of experimental ‘how-to’ videos and her media archeological takes on the technology she finds in the garbage.

While eating popcorn and testing out a demo or two we will look into the artistic research findings of High Fidelity Wasteland, the artist’s sound-centric trilogy that experiments with the material waste left over from generations of decomposing sound reproduction technology. HIFI to LOFI Continuum culminates in a field trip to the iMAL exhibition Fin et début / Einde en begin for a listening session within High Fidelity Wasteland II: Protoplastic Groove — is an immersive sound installation consisting of a modified 1950s era record player that devolves the audible timescale of music from the past.

FIN ET DEBUT

What comes after damaged landscapes? Where do we build our futures on? And with whom?

In her poem End and Beginning, the Polish Nobel Laureate Wisława Szymborska, describing a barren landscape in the aftermath of war, weaves a narrative of resilience, reflection, and hope. Reflecting on the struggles for renewal, healing and collective responsibility her words carry a diachronic significance. Although referring to a specific conflict, her verses hold a frightening and unfortunate universal validity making her call for communal action, empathy, and care more relevant than ever. Inspired by Szymborska’s reflection on the collapse of ideologies, the relentless passage of time and history, and the irreversible decay of the past along with everything that comes with it, iMAL wonders: How would a future built on empathy and collective care look like?

Challenging long-held notions of human singularity, excessive progress, and growth Fin et début / Einde en begin redefines the notion of care as an ecological and relational structure; as a polyphonic assemblage of shared existence between human, nature and technology. Embarking on an exploratory journey into alternative systems of care between humans and non-human entities, this exhibition offers a place of transformative encounters fostering self-reflection and re-imagination of the infinite possibilities of our shared futures.

Curated as an intricate narrative of care, the exhibition unfolds across three interconnected circles: Care for Humans, Care for Nature and Care for Technology. The exhibition presents 11 works produced within the European Media Arts Platform (EMAP) residency program and 4 recent productions by Belgium-based artists. Their encounter offers space for reflection and reconsideration of formative societal infrastructures such as labour, communal practices, energy consumption and highlights the vitality for inter-species knowledge exchange and the importance of empathy for humans and other-than-human entities through diverse lenses. By giving agency to and drawing connections between underrepresented voices and alternative perspectives—be they human, artificial, natural, or imaginative—the exhibition invites the public to take a step towards unexplored territories of our shared futures and reimagine resilient collective ecosystems rooted in multispecies cooperation.

Here, “everything is intelligent and worthy of our care and conscious attention.” (James Bridle, Ways of Being)

Sept. 6th
19.00-20.00
TivoliVredenburg – Hertz

New Interfaces for Musical Expression (NIME), is an international conference about new musical interfaces, their artistic use and the technologies involved in building them. Researchers from all over the world share their knowledge and late breaking work during the conference. The conference started as a workshop at the CHI conference in 2001 and, since then, has been held annually around the world.

NIME2024 will be held between September 2 and 6, 2024 in Utrecht. The conference will be held physically but with opportunities to follow the conference online as well. This years edition is organised by three institutions: Sounds Like Touch, Gaudeamus and HKU (University of the Arts Utrecht). The conference is partly ingrained within the Gaudeamus Festival 2024. This festival annually attracts about 3000 (inter)national visitors and hosts a the Gaudeamus Award, an incentive prize for composers under 35. Visitors at the Gaudeamus Festival are known to not only be interested in New Music but also in new ways of making it. There will also be lots of concerts that are interesting for the NIME audience and an Off-NIME program is part of it.
